About Sharron Tancred – Mural Artist & Custom Artwork Specialist
“It’s art for the heart and from the heart” Sharron Tancred, 2006
Hello and thank you so very much for visiting! This is my story.
Completing your home, to be all it can be, and I mean, beautiful, meaningful and of value is one of the hardest tasks to do, but the rewards are huge!
In decorating, it is the beautiful and meaningful bit, that is the hardest, not the shopping, buying or lugging it all home, but the recipe to get it right.
This has been my story starting with a revolt against mass-produced prints that’s lead me on a journey towards cosmetic home upgrades!
Which brings me to being honest with you. I am going to open up on why I do what I do: art commissions,
Why don’t I make my life easier and just paint whatever is in my head like every other artist out there?
My story! So, let me delve deep here. I promise not to bore you!
Graphic Designer & Illustrator
For 23 years I was a Graphic Designer and Illustrator in Brisbane, in London, in Ad agencies, design studios and as a freelancer. My last boss allowed me to create collages for clients and charity auctions; such fun! However, after 23 years of graphics, I got bored. Bored! I began to search for something else that wouldn’t waste my skills.
A new idea! A friend, Tracie Rodwell Dunne, who owned the Beaumont Interior Design school said, Sharron, “do my Interior Decorating and Colour Psychology courses so that you can tailor artworks to homes for Interior Designers!” Wow right!
This was the answer and NOT because I was bored.
Meaning. I have always thought that art was sometimes more for the artist than for the viewer and how great it would be if we could really understand art and relate it to our own lives and homes and what if that art could enhance our home and what if, it inspired the rest of the decor so your whole world was built around the artwork!
Art to Make Your Heart Sing
The idea behind creating art that would make mine, let alone my client’s hearts sing, made enormous sense to me.
Love it or match it? The other thing I couldn’t stand was seeing people live in embarrassingly unordered spaces when all it took was a bit of education and some effort.
All the galleries and art critics advise that you should never buy art to match a couch, only art you love. There is a divide out there people! Why would you buy art you love that looks awful in your space or works against it? I always thought, why can’t it be both. Match and be loved?
2006, Tailored Artworks is born
Experiences. Tailoring the artworks and murals to my client’s homes has made it practical… which led to another BIG idea. I hated the idea of people feeling disconnected from art because they didn’t understand it. I do believe that
I started offering art experiences: Private Adult or Child Art Workshops where they could sign their name to their masterpiece, love their art and have it match the blasted couch! I believe everyone deserves a beautiful gallery-quality work of art that expresses their personality.
The Trust Factor. The other thing that has made me very mad has been that “The art market is notoriously opaque—the cliché is that it is the largest unregulated industry in the world, besides guns and drugs,” (Art News Summer, 2016) and clients have little expectation of what to spend on
Fairness. With help from one of my dear business friends Orfelia Young, we developed a user pays system so that if all a client wanted was charcoal on canvas with them doing their own freight and design research then that’s all they paid for. The result; astounding. We now have a fair, honest and transparent quoting system many businesses would be envious of. Michael Jackson said, “If you want to change the world, look in the mirror.”
Another new idea. I’ve built Tailored Artworks with help from wonderful friends and family who will forever have my gratitude. In March 2015, my interior designer Tracie Rodwell Dunne joined me at my Brisbane Home Shows to help out… and guess what?! She got work! Hear that penny drop!
2015 The Art and Decor Consultants Story
The roller coaster ride! So, over a few years at the Brisbane Home Shows my Interior Designer Decorators and
A new mission. After 18 Home Show Expos, I quit, with a plan to develop new products based on ideas Home Show visitors had given me. Already a member of QIDA (Queensland Interior Decorators Association), I joined the HIA (Housing Industry Association) and KBDI (Kitchen and Bathroom Designers Institute) and Arts Law Australia, so I could increase my contacts, learning and ensure I had the right industry advice.
2017-2018 The Cosmetic Home Upgrades Story
Developing the Built-in Art Assets. So, those new products, I termed as Built-in Art Assets: Art that stays when you sell and adds beauty, meaning and value to your property.
The Real Art Kitchen Splashback story: from September 2017 it took me 6 months, SIX!, and 3 glass suppliers to perfect the Real Art Kitchen Splashbacks process: it was huge! We did our first one and it took just 2 hours to install! I researched all the paints, the substrates, the freight process, you name it. It had to be fire, mould, mildew, dust, cracking…bla, bla, bla, resistant. Hence 6 months and voila, gained approval from the HIA and QBCC Legislations Compliance. I felt so proud. We installed our first one in just 2 hours without a hitch.
The roller coaster ride! Simultaneously to the hand painted kitchen splashbacks, I worked through Art into Mosaics, Moveable Outdoor Murals and became an Accredited Applicator for Haymes Paints Artisan range. I felt like it was all coming together.
Then it hit me. An Interior Designer introduced me to a printer who could print texturally. That was interesting: textured printing. I thought fantastic! We can print art so it looks like art, not flat stuff mass produced, but looking real and “wholesome”. Cool. My artist-decorator mind went to work and out came, Tile Murals and Glass Murals!
Tile Murals and Glass Murals: The final chapter. So, from art, to feature walls, to outdoor murals that could be moved, to contemporary styled mosaic for all spaces to TV wall murals and now art that could be texture printed onto tiles and glass. Instantly, work came in. I was helping folks with their whole house, solving the style issue and having the products to do it myself with the interior designers filling in the gaps, so to speak.
The Future: My Dream.
I wrote a plan. Put on a Business Mentor. Changed web site development companies for fresh young eyes. I’m going to offer Limited Edition Tile and Glass Murals for online sales for the Aged Care and Hospitality industries and home renovations using old artworks from my library and creating new originals which I’ll sell online. I’ll put on an Interior Decorator assistant and within 5 years develop a Business Course for Artists, so I can give back all I have learned and incrase the Tailored Artworks message.
Thanks for listening and please, if you love my work, my theories or have a grumble and think I can do better, don’t be shy! Reach out to me on the phone, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or via email. Love to chat!
